When we think of digital technologies, we often focus on how they change our communications. Policies that shape these tools are usually discussed in terms of free expression. But digital technologies – from social media to search engines to AI – also have profound impacts on the ways we come together for worship or protest, with whom we associate, and how we organize civil society.

Lucy Bernholz (Stanford University) and Toussaint Nothias (New York University), editors of the forthcoming book, AI and Assembly: Coming Together and Apart in a Datafied World (Stanford University Press, 2025) will discuss the book’s findings and its implications for nonprofits, civil society, and democracy.
